Indiana Members CU: Approving more members without more risk
Our loan officers were manually underwriting a lot of the loans and we were having inconsistent decisions. We discovered that with automation that most of our approvals were probably 98% percent could be automated and then we can focus more of the manual underwriting on just the 2% that needed it. I'm Kathleen Mitchell with Indiana Members Credit Union. I'm the Vice President of Branch Operations. We are a $3.5 billion dollars credit union and we have 164,000 members. At Indiana Members Credit Union, we do all direct lending. We don't have any indirect lending. So our loan officers and our account reps are always looking for opportunities to take advantage of, and so they're looking for the car loans out there and getting those additional products. So we do have a highly motivated team to get those applications. Before we moved over to, arc OS with Origence, we were struggling to get decisions done, quickly. Our loan officers were manually underwriting a lot of the loans and we were having inconsistent decisions. We decided to go to Origence and have them demonstrate a solution that included decision automation. Origence came to the table and asked us what we were looking for and provided us with sound solutions, was able to demonstrate what it would look like and was with us from start to finish in setting everything up, helping us set up our training and implementing and going to live. Arc OS is a really good tool for our managers, loan officers and account rep. The process of inputting that information and getting to a complete application and a decision is quick, efficient, and makes their job easy. At Indiana Members Credit Union, our primary loan product is auto loans. We do them very well, but we also want to help our members with other dreams or products that they're looking for. So we do personal loans, credit cards, boat loans, RVs, and the decision engine has the tools we need to look at different risk analysis and offsetting those risk and pricing. It really makes the process a lot easier to get to those approved decisions. We've achieved 56% of applications going to funding through arc OS. The national average is around 34%. I attribute that success to our highly motivated team and arc OS in getting us to that goal. Our average credit score of 750 in 2025 is higher than the national average. At the same time, our average loan amount climbed from $24,000 to $29,000. This reflects a deliberate strategy to attract a stronger borrower who trusts us with larger loan amounts. We reached out to Origence for a decision engine optimization review. Our rep came to the credit union with a lot of information that was very eye opening. Our rep was able to identify that fifty percent of our applications that were going to refer status were actually being flipped to an approved status. This identified that we had rules within the decision engine that were too conservative and we were able to get those rules tweaked and able to get more applications to an approved status. Seven out of ten of our auto applications are handled systematically. What that means for my team is that they're able to put the focus where the most need is, helping those bigger problems or manually underwriting those more challenging loans. DEO has provided faster member decisions, less repetitive tasks for our staff, and more consistent outcomes across the board. What I would tell the credit union executives if they have not done a decision engine optimization is to look at the data. One out of three auto applications that we were reviewing could have had an automated decision made. We are wasting the members time having them wait. We are wasting the loan officers time having them manually underwrite something that we can confidently say the decision engine can make that decision. The benefits of having the premium support with Origence and having that relationship with the same support employee is they understand our mission. We like to build a relationship and having premium support means that I have the same rep every time I have an issue. I know who I'm going to talk to, I know the availability, we're going to get a quick response, get on the calendar, so this was important to us. Indiana Members considers Origence a partner and a teammate. We couldn't do what we do and we couldn't be as successful as we are without the support of Orig and the decision engine optimization and the products that they refer to us.

Automated Loan Decisioning (Origence arc OS™)
Watch Kathleen Mitchell, VP of branch operations at Indiana Members Credit Union, share how Origence arc OS™ helped the credit union move routine approvals out of manual underwriting.
Before implementing arc OS, loan officers manually underwrote applications, which created inconsistent decisions and slowed the lending process. Now, arc OS auto-decisions the majority of approvals, and the team spends its time on the ones that need real judgment.
Origence ran a decision engine optimization (DEO) review. Several rules were set tighter than the credit union’s own risk appetite required, unnecessarily routing creditworthy borrowers to manual review. Recalibrated, arc OS now auto-decisions 7 of 10 auto loan applications. Average loan size climbed from $24,000 to $29,000.
